Well, damn. Their first album (on cassette naturally) was one of the first ones I ever bought with my own money.

Same here. I think he might have been my first rock hero. My
15 year old self*
(as well as the 51 year old self) is very sad right now

What an awesome shot!! Our guitar player, back probably exactly when your photo was taken, was a huge Van Halen fan as well. He had that exact Baretta but it was painted up like Frankie. He even had the red coveralls. Van Halen was such a huge influence. Their 1984 tour was crazy to see them on stage...in real life. They were larger than life.

Yet another reminder that I don’t need: we all get sick and old. And the 80s i s uncomfortably long ago.

Yes...forgot about that

Selfie 1986.
1. Set magazine were you can see it
2. Set up tripod, hope you’re framed up OK
3
. Try to pose like the photo.
4. Squat a little because you’re 6" taller and can’t put your arm on the case.
5. Take one photo because developing photos is expensive.
6. Wait until you finish the roll of film before getting it developed.
7. Put photo in drawer for 35 years.

I knew he was fighting cancer but this really gutted me. He’s the reason I picked up a guitar in 8th grade, damn near 40 years ago.

Fuzzy black kit with zebra skin kick and black cymbals. Not shown...Fastway bandana on my second tom. The mos t 80's drum kit without spending $5k on an Ayotte kit

So Frankie :) I don’t think he wore a hat, but the oversized big font shirt made me think of him.
I love these old images, thanks for sharing.
Wait, is there fur on your cymbals
, too?

It’s a Much Music shirt but now I see what you’re saying.
There’s no fir on those cymbals, but from what I remember, they sounded like there was.
